나는 파라과이에서 보낸 시간이 꽤 길었지만, 한국에서 태어나 모든 학창 시절을 마쳤기에 여전히 신기하고 부러운 문화가 있다. 이곳의 학교는 빠르면 유치원부터 고등학교 졸업까지 성장 과정 전체를 함께 지나온다. 그래서인지, 학교는 형제 같은 우애를 키워내는 공간처럼 보인다.
내 또래 친구들만 봐도 학창 시절 친구를 주저 없이 '내 형제자매'라고 부르곤 하는데, 그들이 함께 쌓아온 시간을 상상해 보면 절로 고개가 끄덕여진다. 개구쟁이 시절부터 질풍노도의 사춘기까지 함께 보내면 어떨까 생각해 보면.. 그게 형제가 아니면 뭐겠나.. 개인적으로 참 많이 부러운 부분이다.

Even though I’ve lived in Paraguay for a long time, having completed all my school years in Korea means there are still parts of the culture that leave me both fascinated and envious. Here, schools often carry kids together from kindergarten all the way through high school graduation. When I see friends my age refer to their schoolmates as 'brothers and sisters' without hesitation, I can’t help but nod along. Growing up together through every chaotic stage of life—if that isn't family, what is?
